Opening Our Arms to Welcome New Children

tempFileForShare_2015-09-06-22-54-09_resized If you are a parent pause for a moment and imagine what it would be like to be put out of your home with three small children having nowhere to go and no way to provide for them. Consider also how a child feels to lose the only home they know. How sad we would feel, discouraged, and alone! In this despair perhaps a glimmer of hope would arise if we knew of someone merciful who could help in our time of need.

Actually this is not an imaginary story but a real experience for a mother who recently showed up at the Bread of Life orphanage with three children. When the staff asked the mother what she wanted she simply asked if her children could stay at the orphanage. They had been living with the children’s grandfather but he had turned them out on the street and they had nowhere to go.

Even though we don’t know all the details yet, their photo indicates a past life filled with hardship. The oldest girl, Raluca, age 7, almost manages a smile with her lips (though you can still see the sadness in her eyes). Stefan, age 6, and Miruna, age 5, look expressionless.

While I don’t think any institute or orphanage can take the place of a good home; at the Bread of Life orphanage both staff and children will do what they can to put smiles on the newcomer’s faces. Many of the other children understand for they also came through difficult circumstances and have found security and comfort at the children’s home in Brosteni.

Then shall the King say…I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you took me in.

Each fall, children approach the first day of school with nervous anticipation or eager excitement. As a child, I loved school. I remember preparing with a list in hand, carefully choosing pencils and notebooks. We weren’t wealthy, but my parents always found a way. Sadly, many children in Romania don’t get to experience that joy. For them, choosing school supplies or packing a backpack is out of reach. Without basic tools, some can’t attend school at all—missing the education that could shape their future.
