Winter time in Romania

The area surrounding the village of Brosteni and the Bread of Life Orphanage is very mountainous. Winters here tend to be long and harsh. You and I may look forward to the holidays, beautiful winter scenes, and outdoor activities. For many people in this part of Romania who live in poorly constructed homes, the approach of winter means several months of trying to keep warm. During severe cold weather, life can be especially difficult for the elderly, the frail, and the widows.

Through our Meals on Wheels project, the older children from the Orphanage take daily meals by bicycle to a number of these elderly in the nearby area. We also give blankets to these same folks as we find they have need of them. The aid that we supply obviously provides these dear folks with relief for their physical needs. Just as important, the visit of the children brightens their spirits during the long cold winters.

One widow that receives aid in this way is Ana. She is 80 years old and lives close to Brosteni. Words cannot express Ana›s reaction when we presented her with food and blankets! With tears and blessings she thankfully received the gifts. Ana is a good example for us as she trusts God to take care of her during the final years of her life. Many times God uses His people to answer prayer and minister to the needy. May we faithfully be the hands and feet of our Lord as He directs us.

“Let thy widows trust in Me.” Jeremiah 49:11

“You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” – Psalm 139:16 None of us chose to enter this world, nor did we select the families or circumstances into which we were born. These aspects of life are beyond our control, yet they shape us deeply.

God’s Word instructs us to care for the vulnerable, especially the widows and elderly. Psalm 56:8 states, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in Your bottle.” Inspired by this, the Bread of Life ministry extends compassion to the elderly, who often go unnoticed despite their sacrifices and hard work in earlier years.
