Special Medical Needs

As we go about our daily routines, we consider health to be a given. We believe we will always be able to get up and go. It takes experiencing a medical problem to realize what a blessing we have in good health.

We are thankful to God that most of the children at the Bread of Life Children’s Home in Brosteni have overall good health. Although, quite a few of them have severe dental issues due to not enough or the wrong kind of food in the first years of life. Thanks to Paul a ministry friend who is a dentist and his team, we are receiving free dental care. We only need to cover the travel expense to Suceava, a town about two hours away. He has reserved time for us, and we hope to address all emergencies in a few trips.

Besides our routine medical care, we have a few children with more significant issues. We have shared in the past about Estera’s medical problem. She has varicose veins in one leg, and we have been fighting this for several years now. Every month for several months out of the year, we take her to a hospital in Targu Mures, four hours away for a session of chemotherapy. The goal is to have the varicose veins retract to the point of removing them surgically. She went through this before, and they managed to decrease it and avoid a potential crisis as these could break and cause internal bleeding. The medicine she needs is impossible to get in Romania, but we have managed to find it in Germany, and they are quite costly. In addition to travel and locating medication problems, we are deeply concerned about her emotional stability as she can not enjoy a normal childhood. She is in constant alert mode to protect her leg and has hard days after each chemo session.

Another more recent situation that needs surgical intervention involves a young girl named Larisa. She suffers from a genetic disorder and was born with the middle fingers of each hand joined. She has been struggling with this since her childhood. Now that she is part of the BOLCH, we want to help her fix this. We could not advance with this during 2020 because of the national COVID crisis, but we have managed to schedule her for surgery in Targu Mures in the next few weeks.

And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
1 Corinthians 12:26

It is always challenging for a family when one of their children suffers. So we plead with you and ask that you pray for them and the immediate medical interventions. Please know that through all you do for BOL and through your financial sacrifice, you make the life of children like Estera and Larisa much easier. We appreciate you and pray for you.

Thank you for your interest in Bread of Life Ministries. We have been able to accomplish a lot with the help of our supporters around the world. There is still more for us to do. Please prayerfully consider how you might help support Bread of Life as we provide support to children and families in need.

For many of us, the word “graduation” brings to mind robes, diplomas, and proud family photos. But for the teenagers who are part of the Bread of Life family, this moment is so much more. It marks a profound achievement, a courageous transition into adulthood, and a first real step toward independence. Their determination inspires us and fills us with joy and pride.

Each fall, children approach the first day of school with nervous anticipation or eager excitement. As a child, I loved school. I remember preparing with a list in hand, carefully choosing pencils and notebooks. We weren’t wealthy, but my parents always found a way. Sadly, many children in Romania don’t get to experience that joy. For them, choosing school supplies or packing a backpack is out of reach. Without basic tools, some can’t attend school at all—missing the education that could shape their future.
