Missions Through Education

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.  (Proverbs 2:1-5)

Often we think of a Christian’s mission as taking the gospel to those who have never heard it so that they can be saved and spiritually transformed. After that they just need to pray, read the Bible, and attend church. While these are clearly core elements of our Christian duty there are other aspects of our mission as members of God’s kingdom. Education, especially when working with children, is an example. I got involved with Bread of Life’s Feeding Center program because I saw that children were being helped in all areas of life including their education. Encouraging children to improve their education and learn life skills at the same time they hear God’s word and receive good nutrition really makes the Feeding Center program effective and unique. In the year I have been involved, I have seen the children’s progress and how much they have recovered since Bread of Life reached them. I am convinced that God’s work in their lives will continue to be blessed as they continue their education which is one of the pillars in our Christian mission, in our family life, and in our society.

It is our desire for all young adults to have renewed spirits, and to develop good characters that show in all aspects of their lives. Even at this early stage of their lives we encourage them to demonstrate their Christian faith to others through their school work and study habits. Our Christian mission through education testifies that we are ready to serve God not only with our hearts and emotions, but also with our minds, using all that He gave us.

It is never too late to learn and serve God more. By working toward our vision of education ministry, our children will be able to break the cycle of poverty and eventually have Christian families of their own.

For many of us, the word “graduation” brings to mind robes, diplomas, and proud family photos. But for the teenagers who are part of the Bread of Life family, this moment is so much more. It marks a profound achievement, a courageous transition into adulthood, and a first real step toward independence. Their determination inspires us and fills us with joy and pride.

Each fall, children approach the first day of school with nervous anticipation or eager excitement. As a child, I loved school. I remember preparing with a list in hand, carefully choosing pencils and notebooks. We weren’t wealthy, but my parents always found a way. Sadly, many children in Romania don’t get to experience that joy. For them, choosing school supplies or packing a backpack is out of reach. Without basic tools, some can’t attend school at all—missing the education that could shape their future.
